Fix 1 – Close unnecessary background apps

• Overlay & recording software:  Discord Overlay, Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA Overlay, AMD Software Overlay, and OBS Studio.

Steam

If loading becomes smoother and crashes during map loading disappear, your original storage device may have been contributing to the problem.

Fix 6 – Wait through the anti-cheat screen

Many players mistake the anti-cheat loading screen for a crash.

In reality, the game may still be initializing anti-cheat services or building shader caches in the background. Depending on your hardware and storage speed, this process can take several minutes during the beta.

1. Launch the game. Wait at least 2–3 minutes on the anti-cheat screen.
2. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
3. Check whether Gears of War: E-Day is still using CPU or disk resources.

Fix for GDK runtime is not available error

If you are playing Gears of War: E-Day via Xbox Game Pass for PC and experiencing crashes right after the Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) window with a LowLevelFatalError or GDK runtime is not available error, the cause may be the game’s included DirectStorage files. You can remove them to see if that resolves the problem.

1. Open your game installation folder: Xbox Games > Eday > Content > FairlightConcept > Binaries > WinGDK.
2. Locate dstoragecore.dll and move it out of the folder (drag it to your Desktop as a backup).
3. Launch GOWEDay.exe inside the same folder. You may see a black screen or a “bootstrap failed” prompt.
4. Go back one folder to Xbox Games > Eday > Content and run start_protected_game.exe.

The game should now boot up and compile shaders properly.

If the steps above still don’t help, move both dstoragecore.dll and dstorage.dll out of the folder. Then verify the game files and launch the game directly from the Xbox App.
