If your keyboard is unresponsive, certain keys aren’t working, or you’re experiencing lag, updating the driver might resolve these issues. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to update your keyboard driver.
Before proceeding, it’s important to note that depending on the type of keyboard you’re using, the methods for getting driver updates may vary.
Try These Methods
- Use the Device Manager
- Download Drivers from the Manufacturer’s Website
- Use Driver Easy to Update Drivers Automatically
Method 1: Use the Device Manager
This is the standard method for updating drivers on Windows.
- On your keyboard, press Win logo key + R to open the Run box. Then type devmgmt.msc and hit Enter. This will open the Device Manager.
- Expand the Keyboards category, right-click the device and select Update driver.
In Device Manager, your keyboard typically appears under generic names such as HID Keyboard Device, and Logitech HID-compliant Keyboard (While for built-in laptop keyboard, it may appear as Standard PS/2 Keyboard. ).
The manufacturer may not provide a standalone driver download for the keyboard. Instead, the keyboard utilizes Windows’ built-in HID (Human Interface Device) drivers for basic functionality. For advanced features like RGB lighting, macros, and firmware updates, you need to download and install the proprietary software such as Logitech G HUB, Razer Synapse, and Corsair iCUE. - Click Search automatically for drivers.
- If no updates are found, Windows will state The best drivers for your device are already installed. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the most recent driver is installed. Device Manager primarily checks the local driver store and the Windows Update database for available drivers. In this case, you can click on Search for updated drivers on Windows Update, where you’ll be directed to check for Windows updates, which may come with available driver updates.
- This will direct you to the Windows Update settings page. If you’re told that Updates available to install, click on the Install all button. Otherwise, you’ll need to manually check for updates and then follow the on-screen instructions to download and install all the updates.
When finished, you should be prompted to restart your PC.
Method 2: Download Drivers from the Manufacturer’s Website
If you’re using a built-in keyboard on a laptop or an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) desktop keyboard, you can also obtain driver updates from the manufacturer’s support page.
- Identify your model: You can check the model number from the System Information window. What you have to do is press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box, then type msinfo32 and hit Enter.
Note: Although you might find further that most provide an option to automatically identify the specific model you’re using, it can cost so much time and it may fail to do that. So it’s suggested that you note down this information. - Visit the manufacturer’s official support website, find the Drivers & Download section (It might be called in a different way) and input the information of your model into the search field. You might also need to filter results by your operating system version.
- Look for drivers related to the keyboard, often labeled as Keyboard, Input Device, or Human Interface Device (HID). Then download and install the latest version available. Screenshot below is for HP ZHAN 99 Pro G2 Microtower PC. Yours may look slightly different.
Method 3: Use Driver Easy to Update Drivers Automatically
While manual methods like using Device Manager or downloading drivers from the manufacturer’s website are effective, they can be time-consuming and may not always yield desired results. This is where Driver Easy comes into play.
Driver Easy is a user-friendly tool designed to simplify the process of updating drivers on your Windows PC. With an extensive database of drivers that are direct from the manufacturers, it ensures that your hardware components, including keyboards, are always equipped with the latest and most compatible drivers. The software automatically scans your system, identifies outdated or missing drivers, and installs the appropriate updates with just a few clicks.

- Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.
- Check if your device is flagged in the scan results. If it is, click Activate & Update to start a 7-day free trial or upgrade to Driver Easy Pro. Either option will automatically download and install the audio driver for you.
- Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
