Resident Evil Village, the eighth major entry in the Resident Evil series (RE8), is available now! With ultra-realistic graphics, pulse-pounding first-person action and skillful storytelling, the terror in RE8 has never felt more realistic.

However, just like other newly launched games, Resident Evil Village is not immune to performance issues. Recently, we’ve seen that many gamers are experiencing in-game fps drops. If you’re on the same boat, you’ve come to the right place! After reading this article, you should be able to fix this issue on your own easily!

Try these fixes

Here’s a list of fixes that have resolved this problem for other RE8 players. You don’t have to try them all. Just work your way through the list until you find the one that does the trick for you.

  1. Update your graphics driver
  2. Optimize GPU Settings

  4. Disable the Steam Overlay
  5. Set Resident Evil Village to High priority
  6. Close resource-hogging apps
  7. Set the Power Plan of your PC for high performance
  8. Adjust your Windows system for the best performance

Fix 1: Update your graphics driver

Updating drivers should always be your go-to option when you’re experiencing in-game fps drops. Whether you choose to update the device drivers manually, using Windows Update, or you use a trusted third party product, it’s essential that you have the latest correct device drivers for your operating system at all times.

According to the latest graphics driver release notes from Nvidia and AMD, both graphics manufacturers provide optimal support for Resident Evil Village:

If you’re not comfortable playing with device drivers, we recommend using Driver Easy. It’s a tool that detects, downloads and (if you go Pro) installs any driver updates your computer needs.

  1. Download and install Driver Easy.
  2. Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

Fix 2: Optimize GPU Settings

If the in-game FPS doesn’t imrpove much after you updated your graphics driver, you may need to tweak the graphics settings. Here’s how to do it:

Step 1: Tweak your graphics card settings

You need to tweak your graphics card settings in Nvidia or AMD control panel.

For Nvidia users, follow the steps below:

  1. Right-click on your desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel from the context menu.
  2. Click Manage 3D Settings on the left, then navigate to the Program Settings tab. In the Select a program to customize: part, add Resident Evil Village from the program list.
  3. In the Specify the settings for this program section, modify following settings:

    Image Sharpening : Off
    Threaded Optimization : On
    Power Management : Prefer Maximum Performance
    Low Latency Mode : Off
    Vertical sync : Off
    Texture filtering – Quality : Performance
  4. Click Apply to save the changes.

For AMD users, follow the steps below:

  1. Open AMD Radeon Settings.
  2. Go to Gaming > Global Settings. Then modify the settings the same way you see on the screenshot below.

Launch the game to see the fps increases. If not, move on to modify Windows 10 OS graphics settings.

Step 2: Modify Windows 10 OS graphics settings

Simply follow the steps below to modify Windows 10 OS graphics settings:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and type graphics settings. Then select Graphics settings from the list of search results to open it.

  2. In the Graphics settings window, click Browse to open File Explorer.

  3. Then go to the drive where you save Resident Evil Village game files > Program Files (x86) or Program Files > Steam > steamapps > common > Resident Evil Village game folder, double-click the .exe file of Resident Evil Village to add the game.
  4. Once added, click the Options button under re8.exe, then select High performance and click Save.

Restart the game to see if it runs smoothly. If not, you may need to move on and modify the in-game graphics settings.

Step 3: Modify in-game graphics settings

Try lowering the in-game graphics setting to see if you’ll squeeze out a few extra FPS and performance:

  1. Launch Resident Evil Village, click Start the game and go to Options > Display.
  2. Tweak the settings one by one until you find the graphics profile that suits your hardware and ganrantees a good gaming experience.

Restart the game to check if the Resident Evil Village fps drops again. If this issue persists, try the next fix, below.

Fix 3: Install the latest game patch


CAPCOM releases regular game patches to fix bugs and improve gaming performance. It’s possible that a recent patch has caused the game crash issue, and that a new patch is required to fix it.

If a patch is available, it will be detected by Steam, and the latest game patch will be automatically downloaded and installed when you launch the game.

Run Resident Evil Village again to see whether the FPS is back to normal. If it didn’t work, or there was no new game patch available, move on to next fix, below.

Fix 4: Disable the Steam Overlay

If you have the Steam Overlay turned on and FPS drops while playing Resident Evil Village, just try disabling Steam Overlay for Resident Evil Village to see FPS increases. Here is how to do it:

  1. Launch Steam and navigate to the LIBRARY tabright-click on Resident Evil Village. Then select Properties.

  2. In the GENERAL section, Uncheck Enable Steam Overlay while in-game.

Fix 5: Set Resident Evil Village to High priority

This fix lets the Windows OS allocate more resources to run Resident Evil Village. Normally, it should increase your performance, especially when you have other programs running in the background.

To set Resident Evil Village to High priority:

  1. Launch Resident Evil Village.
  2. On your keyboard, press CtrlShift and Esc at the same time to open Task Manager. You will be prompted for permission. Click Yes to open Task Manager.
  3. Navigate to the Detail tab. Right-click the main process of Resident Evil Village and select High.

Restart the game to see if the in-game FPS improves. If the FPS is still the same, try the next fix, below.

Fix 6: Close resource-hogging apps

If too many applications or programs are running at the same time in the background, the in-game fps may unstable and even dops a lot. You may need to restrict applications and downloads in the background before playing the game. Here is how to do it:

  1. On your keyboard, press CtrlShift and Esc at the same time to open Task Manager. You will be prompted for permission. Click Yes to open Task Manager.
  2. Select any other applications and programs that take up a large amount of CPU, memory and network and then click End task to close it.

Run Resident Evil Village to see if you can play the game smoothly. if not, try the next fix, below.

Fix 7: Set the Power Plan of your PC for high performance

A power plan is a collection of hardware and system settings that manages how your computer use power. Windows 10 allows you to customize the power plan on your PC.

In most cases, the power plan on PCs are configured to Balanced, which may limits the operating capacity of your graphics card and CPU.

If the power plan of your PC is Power saver or Balanced and you’re experiencing the FPS drops issue, try change the Power Plan of your PC for Best Performance:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time, then type powercfg.cpl and press Enter.

Fix 8: Adjust your Windows system for the best performance

If your PC fails to meet the recommended system requirements for Resident Evil Village, try adjusting your Windows system for the best performance. Here is how to do it:

  1. On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key and R at the same time to invoke the Run dialog. Type SystemPropertiesAdvanced and press Enter to open the System Properties window.
