Fix 1: Restart your computer

In addition, if you’re using an external keyboard, make sure to connect the keyboard properly. And you can unplug and re-plug your keyboard again to see if the Tab button not working issue can be resolved.

Fix 2: Update keyboard driver

A missing or outdated keyboard driver can cause some keyboard problems like your Tab key stops working. So you should update your keyboard driver to the latest version.

There are two ways to update your keyboard driver: manually and automatically.

Manually update driver – You can go to the manufacturer’s website of your keyboard, find the latest correct driver for your device, and install it into your computer. Be sure to download the driver that is compatible with your OS.

Automatically update driver – If you don’t have time or patience, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

  1. Download and install Driver Easy.
  2. Run Driver Easy and click the Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

  3. Click the Update button next to all flagged devices to automatically download the correct version of their driver (you can do this with the FREE version). Then install it in your computer.

Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

  4. Restart your computer to take effect.
The Pro version of Driver Easy comes with full technical support.
If you need assistance, please contact Driver Easy’s support team at support@drivereasy.com.

Try the Tab key again and see if it works.

Fix 3: Try keyboard combinations

Your Tab key may be disabled by accidentally pressing some keyboard combinations, so you can try enabling the Tab key by pressing the keyboard combinations. The combinations vary from keyboard to keyboard, and vary from system to system. So if you know the combination to enable the Tab key, you can just give it a try. Or you can try the general combinations listed below:

  1. Press the Alt

key twice, then see if the Tab key restarts to work.
  2. Press and hold the Alt
key, then press the 0, 0, and 9 number keys on your keyboard, and release the keys.
  3. Press the Ctrl
key twice, and try Tab to see if it works.
  4. Press the Windows logo key
twice, and see if it fixes your problem.

If this method doesn’t work for you, don’t worry. There’s something else to try.

Fix 4: Shut down TeamViewer

As reported by many Windows users, the Tab key stops working if they open TeamViewer which is a remote desktop software. So if that’s your case, you should close TeamViewer in your computer.

If closing TeamViewer doesn’t resolve your problem, you should open Task Manager (press the Shift, Ctrl, and Esc keys at the same time), end the task and services for TeamViewer, and it should be working.
