Fix Printer Driver Issues on Windows 10

By Camilla Mo in Driver InstallPrinter IssuesTechnical Tips

After you upgrade the system to Windows 10 from Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, if your printer doesn’t work at all or doesn’t print properly, the printer driver is most probably damaged or incompatible with Windows 10. You can fix the issue by reinstalling and updating the printer driver.

fix printer driver issues Windows 10

Microsoft indicates that Windows 10 will remove some apps and software which are incompatible with the new operating system. This could happen to some printer drivers. Some printer manufacturers such as Canon, Brother, Dell, Epson have updated the Windows 10 drivers for their vast majority of printers. Some manufacturers such as Panasonic haven’t updated the drivers in timely fashion, reporting that Windows 10 drivers for their printers will be available in the near future.

Following are three ways you can use to update the printer drivers in Windows 10.

Way 1: Update your printer driver manually

Way 2: Use Windows Update for new drivers

Way 3: Update your printer driver automatically

Way 1: Update your printer driver manually

You can go to your printer manufacturer’s website to check if your printer model supports Windows 10. If yes, you can download and install the Windows 10 driver for your printer.  If not, you can download the latest version that the manufacturer has released like  Windows 8 version or Windows 7 version. They may be compatible with Windows 10. The driver download can be normally found in Support section. After you download the driver, you can always double-click on the installer file to install the driver.

For some printers, you need to update the drivers manually step by step.

1. Open Control Panel.

2. View by Small icons. Click Device Manager.

3. In Device Manager window, locate the printer device that you wish to update the driver for. For problem device, you can see a yellow mark next to the device name.

Following screen shot is the problem device with a yellow mark for your reference.

4. Right click on the device name and select Update Driver Software…

5. In the pop-up window, you will see two options. It is recommended to select the first option Search automatically for updated driver software.  Then follow the instructions to install the drivers. If you have driver files available on your computer, you can select the second option Browse my computer for driver software.

Way 2: Use Windows Update for new drivers

Please refer to steps below how to use Windows Update in Windows 10 to update drivers.

1. Click Start menu and click Settings.

2. In Settings window, click Update & security.

3. In UPDATE & SECURITY, click Windows Update in left pane.

Click Check for updates, and then wait while Windows looks for the latest updates for your computer.

4. Click the link that tells you optional updates are available. (If you don’t see this link, it means Windows Update didn’t find any updates for your computer.)

5. Select the driver you want to install, click OK, and then click Install updates.

Way 3: Update your printer driver automatically

If you don’t have time, patience and computer skills to update the driver manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks (and you get full support and a 30-day money back guarantee):

1) Download and install Driver Easy.

2) Run Driver Easy and click Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3) Click the Update button next to the printer driver to automatically download and install the correct version of this driver (you can do this with the FREE version). Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

If you’re unable to print or connect to your printer in Windows 10, follow these steps to try and fix the problem:

Make sure that your printer is plugged into the power supply and turned on. Check the USB connection (for wired printers) or the wireless connection (for wireless printers).
If none of the above steps work, download and run the printing troubleshooter ( download link.
If you’re still having problems, your printer may need a new driver. Right-click (or press and hold) the Start button, and select Device Manager. Expand Printers, find your printer in the list, right-click (or press and hold) it, then select Update Driver. Checkout for Printer Support.

we installed Windows 10 are our main computer, all good until we shut down for the night, next morning come in all printers offline. get them back online shut down, again printers offline. I’ve had 2 different IT companies look at this issue, no one has a answer, anyone have any ideas?

  • Every new printer buyer faces the common issue of failed setup or failed installation. No matter which printer we buy, the settings have gotten so overcomplicated. Especially when there are so many different devices we have to connect it to. Laptops, desktops, routers etc require so many different configurations so that all these things work well with our new printer.
we need the help of someone that can simplify technology for us. I was able to get help from Tech Assistance by calling 1800-896-6966. I am sure you will get the resolution you need from there as well.

  • M. Moolla

The HP website says that that my Hp M1005 MFP printer is no longer supported ie. no driver following a a windows 10 update exists. Cannot instal driver as the process stops when you are asked to plug you printer to your PC to enable you to complete installation. Been told by a friend that if manufacturers does not supply updated driver nothing can be done. So Im sitting with a working printer that is useless to me. Shame on HP.
    Any suggestions

    • Jill

I’ve had the exact same problem with my older HP Laserjet for the past couple of versions of Windows. After googling the issue, I found that it will work if I tell it instead of the model it actually is to choose another one that’s similar that still works (that other people had discovered). That’s worked for my upgrades to Win 7 and Win 10, but now it’s not working again after the Win 10 Anniversary update. So I’m googling again. Long story short, there are ways to make it still work many times, but obsolescence stinks.

    • Jon

I’m having the same problem due to the latest Windows 10 upgrade, but with a different HP printer. It’s sort of like the auto industry. Once a printer model is 10 years old, HP usually no longer has a software team supporting it. New printer for me. I could see it coming.

I bought a new HP inkjet printer Oct. 1.2016, Windows 10 with lastest September update will not let me install the HP printer drive. Downloaded but pc doesn’t recognize the printer. How can I fix this??

  • JLR

Need Help HP Laserjet 1320 PCL6 – shared printer, windows 10 Pro – after a recent update on windows 10 pro, the printer stopped printing. Have 3 doing this – shared printer just quit. The ones physically connected to the printer work fine. I’ve tried uninstalling/reinstalling; changing ports, updating the drivers, everything…at a loss. Anyone have a thought what I’m missing?

    • JLR

Also, do I let windows manage the printer? I tried both ways – still not printing.

Applicable for Windows 10 or 8 and 8.1

Again, this is Applicable for Windows 10 or 8 and 8.1.

First of all I have to start by saying Windows 8.1, and parts of Windows 10 “functionability”, is the MOST “stupidest” thing that Microsoft has ever done to us Humans! What a slow, sluggish, annoying piece of, whatever….Anyway, I’m here to tell you folks how I finally SOLVED Printer connection issues with My 3 different Computers (3 different Windows 8, 8.1 and 10). But Before I get started, I have to tell you folks, I spend countless hours and days trying to Install, uninstall, re-install and connect all my windows computers to my Printer to NO avail. I mean, I tried EVERYTING, even calling the Microsoft and the Printer company, Epson, They just couldn’t help me. In some instances, It even appeared to be more knowledgeable to solving my own problems that these so called technical support customer-no-service people. Anyway, sorry for my long stupid story, I was just pissed off.

This is HOW I solved the printer drama problems:

First of all, as long as you keep connection or trying to connect your Printer and Windows Computers via WiFi or Wireless as expected, you will NEVER solve this problem. Just forget about the Printer WiFi/Wireless connection thing for now.

Get a Ethernet Cable and connect your Printer to your Internet Modem/Router DIRECT, meaning, one end of the Ethernet cable connecting to your Printer, and the other end of the Ethernet cable connecting to the Internet Router, direct connection. THAT’S IT!

After this connection, wait for at least 2 minutes for your router and printer to communicate/connect,…after 2 minutes or so, if your printer was indicating “offline” It will change from “grayed-out” or offline to Online. If NOT so, go to devices and Printer on your PC, remove your Printer, and NOW try to add a Printer.

When doing this, make sure your PRINTER SOFTWARE is already installed in your Computer BUT if it’s NOT already installed, just go ahead and install it. Your Computer will connect to your Printer flawlessly without any issues, because by this type of “DIRECT PRINTER-ROUTER CONNECTION” you just FORCED your Windows PC to recognize your Printer as part of the “Home Internet Router-Network accessory”.

Also, If you don’t have a Ethernet port available at the back of your Internet Modem/Router, I advise you do what I did. I bought this “5-Port Fast Ethernet Desktop Switch” on Amazon (HERE: ). Connect this device direct to your Internet Router, this will enable you to have Ethernet PORTS available for direct connections between your Internet router and any other devices.

It’s ONLY 9 bucks and trust me, it’s the BEST in the market, and you will NOT just need it for this Printer problems, but for your network connection issues in the future. It gives you the ability to connect multiple devices to your internet direct instead of WiFi or wireless connections. If you don’t want to buy it on Amazon, go to your local electronic store and buy a similar device that can serve the same purpose.

If you have any question, Please ASK me and I will specifically help you, I know how annoying this problem is tom many people because I’ve been a victim. Please leave me a comment and let me know what you guys think, Happy Printing! And shame on Microsoft for creating this mess, they are the real “baskets-of-deplorables”

    • Lisa

Thanks very much for this I’m off to get ethernet cable as my canon won’t work on the WiFi since the last Microcrap upgrade!!

    • Yolande Peterson

I do not have an Ethernet port available at the back of the printer
(HP3520) There is only a USB port. What can I do?

  • Michelle

I have sorted the driver problem but still cannot scan from my Canon Pixma MG5350. My scanner gives me multiple options for scanning which Windows doesn’t. Can’t even scan multiple pages. Whereas before I could scan from the printer. Printer keeps telling me to set up on the PC but can’t see how to do this. My printer is wireless. Please help!

    • Nancy

Did you get this resolved? I am having the same issue.

  • Bee

    Thank you!

The manual update option worked to update the driver for my elderly Epson printer DX4400 series when both the original software disk, and the download from the Epson site, both failed.

  • Gerald Goodwin

I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX600 printer which is around 8-9 years old and after upgrading to win 10 it would recognise the printer but would not print.
I found that updating the driver did not work simply because Epson had not updated the driver to WQin 10 spec.
After fiddling around my decision, reluctantly, was to buy a new compatible printer.
Somewhere on the net I found some information about this and it is so simple you wouldn’t believe.
All you have to do is change the printer port from LPT1
    to USB001 it works.

    • Robin Moore

Worked like a charm! Lpt to sub and I’m printing again. Shame on you canon for offering 10 percent off new printer and not knowing this simple fix!!!

Same problem/ after Windows 10 automatic updates my old Epson 640 colour printed came up with error meassage ‘No driver’. Searched the web and the Epson Official site had the first clue…not easy but followed their program and Epson Easy Print driver is now the latest driver for an Epson 640 on a 32 bit Windows 10 upgrade.

Downloaded the driver but failed to kick start the printer. Went in Control Panel and looked at printer properties. Decided to dedicate printer to USB 001 virtual port but this did not work…tried again and clicked on ‘Apply’….Printer has wakened again from the dead..old driver use to run a quick print head clean at start up but new driver does not do this..not a problem you can do a manual clean if you want anytime.

Hope this helps others…can’t keep dashing out spending cash dumping good equipment.

    • Michele

I have an Epson CX4600 which dissappeared after a Windows 10 update this week. After many hours of searching and reading, I was able to make it reappear but it would not print. I accidently saw your post, and decided to try changing port before going out to buy a new printer. Guess what, it works !!!
Thank you so much Gerald for the info.

    • Carolyn C

Thank you so much this worked perfectly! Unplugged printer cord from the back of my computer and switched to the USB port on the front, then uninstalled and re-installed using the “usb” option. Immediately spit out the test page!!!

  • Anthony

I have an Epson D88 printer which failed under Windows 10, although it was ‘recognized’ !
Tried all the on-line remedies and was about to revert to Windows 7 when I came across
this site (which I had avoided, thinking that it might be a “subscription scam”) – Sorry !
My D88 printer icon showed up with a green tick in the devices section,as usual, but there
was another non-ticked one alongside; it may have been created elsewhere during the hours
of failed attempts. I switched icons and BINGO – what a relief – THANKS A MILLION.

Bought an older Brother printer, DCP-J152W, so I could still use recharged cartridges. Did not update drivers, but if I install Windows 10 Brother does have a new driver, but I afraid the driver will make it hard or impossible to use recharged cartridges. Anyone with experience in this?

We do have a Nashua copier/scanner/printer/fax.

  • Mary D.

I am not able to print any longer (Lexmark 5650es) after a forced Windows 10 installation & update from Windows7. I’ve tried several things (restart computer & printer, unplug/replug, etc.) and nothing is working. I really need to fix this ASAP. The printer is a local setup with USB plug-in. Any suggestions/help would be truly appreciated.

  • John Nolan

Ok, here is my issue. I have a new Lenovo computer running Windows 10. I am attempting to wirelessly set up a Canon PIXMA MX920 all in one, printer. When I try to install the driver for the printer software and driver (both from the CD and from online) the installation gets to the point where it wants to connect to the printer. It ask if it is connected Network or USB and when you choose the Network tab it begins a search for the device, but never finds it. I have verified the printer is on the proper and same network link to the modem as the PC is.

Any suggestions as to how I can get this to work? I feel as though it has to be something in Win10 that is causing the issue. Please help!

    • Roy McKenzie

Did you ever find a solution? I’m a 30-year computer/network engineer and I’ve been absolutely struggling with my wife’s Lenovo laptop (Windows 10) printing over wireless to the same PIXMA MX922 printer. My Latitude laptop with Windows 10 and the same drivers prints with no problem to the Canon. I removed everything Canon from the Lenovo, including drivers, registry entries, files, etc. I’ve downloaded the latest Windows 10 64-bit drivers and they installed OK. No warnings in device manager. I print through to it and then it just sits in the queue, eventually timing out. Had similar issues with customers running Windows 10 with certain HP printers over wireless. Don’t know quite where to turn now.

      • KG

I’m in a similar boat as you Roy. I’ve uninstalled everything canon and reinstalled drivers after the win10 upgrade and still nothing. If I uninstall win10 the printer works right away on win7. Please update if you find/found a solution.

    • Betsy

I also have a Lenovo and updated to Windows 10. I thought something was wrong with my first Canon so I got another MX2922 and that acted funny. I can scan and copy but when I go to print, “Driver unavailable” came up. I uninstalled, reinstalled, rebooted (at which point the print alignment paper would mysteriously print partially and then nothing)and still nothing worked. Bought an HP last night and same thing, “driver unavailable”. Would really appreciate any help.

  • W. Erway

I have a Konica Minolta Magicolor and I can’t get it to work since the recent update. Konica Minolta’s site does not offer a driver for the printer. It is a workhorse of a color laser and I hate to lose it. Any suggestions?

    • Monick

Did you try downloading a driver for another operating system since windows 10 drivers are not available? I just installed the windows 8 (64 bit) driver for my printer on my windows 10 laptop, and, preliminary results… i was able to print. The quality is excellent and in colour.

  • Gwen

OMG! thank you!! did the update for 10 for my printer, restarted the system, now it works! thats amazing!

After W10 update (without my consent BTW)HP 6500 will print fine but will not scan from printer to computer. This doesn’t seem like a driver issue.

    • Andrew Easdale

Exactly the same problem with our Canon printer. After Windows hijacked our PC and gave us no option but to “upgrade” from Windows 7 to Windows 10 the printer will still print but not scan.

      • joyce

Ihave the same problem I bought a new hp all n one desktop win-10 downloaded my canon mx420 printer it shows where it will print but not scan.did you find a solution yet.

        • Robin Gregory

Did you get your scanner to work? I have the same problem with my Epson WF 3640. It prints from my computer but will not scan. When I hit the Epson Scan icon, nothing comes-up on the screen so I cannot select “scan” options. i.e. cannot scan. I went through the whole troubleshooting with Epson, apparently not Epson problem.

        • Robin Gregory

I uninstalled for the 6th time and reinstalled with the Win 8.1 version instead of the Win 10 and IT WORKED! I can now scan.

          • Peter Oitzinger

Having exactly the same issue. EXACTLY. Going to uninstall Windows 10 and reinstall the old and reliable Windows 7 operating System. Windows 10 is a piece of junk.

  • Bob Kramer

My Windows 10 wouldn’t print with my Microline 184 turbo because I mistakenly selected lpt1. When I used the port VirtualUSB, it worked.

Printer: Canon MX922 w/latest driver from Canon
    OS: Latest Windows10 update.

After the update a few of my USB drivers failed to be recognized by the OS. I got all but the Canon printer working by downloading the latest drivers and installing them. Windows says that I have the latest driver but the system says that the last USB device to be installed was not recognized and in Device Manager I get the message “Unknown USB device (device descriptor failed)”. I am at a loss and have yet to resort to using the phone and/or chats. Can you help?

    • david

Im facing the same problem. Any solution?

    • mac

We are having the same problem. Printer is not recognized although thumb drives are recognized in the same usb port. Canon has no modified driver for this printer and no indication I can find that they intend to provide one. Called Canon tech support and the guy hung up on us as soon as we followed his instructions to find a new driver on the Canon website and there was no driver. No explanation, no apology, no suggestion that a solution was in the works. Just hung up. I suppose this situation will influence when we might purchase another Canon product of any type.

  • Rudy

WOW, I am glad that I found your site. I spent over 3 hours on the phone with the Epson tech guy and he went through everything in his book to find my problem. He said Epson is set up to automatically download the new driver when someone upgrades to Windows 10 so he could not provide me with a drive that I could manually download. Following your instructions I was able to download the correct driver and now I have my Printer back!! Thank you.

  • Crosby Lame

I was also facing same issue with my printer. I just had this problem last night when I noticed there was some weird thing happening with my printer. I tried a lot to fix that however I was not able to fix that. I got this link over the internet. I just visited and made a call on their toll free and got instant help for my printer.

  • Les Singh

Thank you for your help – excellent. After 2 days of struggling to get the printer running after Windows 10 once again fouled up something, I was able to fix the problem by following your instructions given in “Update your printer driver manually” . My printer is an older Brother DCP-385C. Part of the problem was the usb3 port which is apparently “too modern” for the printer although it was printing fine until Win10 installed new updates.

  • bjarne straarup

kan ikke opdatere windows 10 til min printer en canon pixma mp 500 hvis det ikke kan lade sig gøre sletter jeg windows 10 igen det giver kun problemer

    • Jeanne

I’m imperssed. You’ve really raised the bar with that.

  • M. Nieniewski

Unfortunately your tips are useless. I updated the driver for HP Laser Jet P2055d. Control Panel says that the driver is uptodate. It is HP Universal Printing PCL 6. However, the printer does not work and gives some error numbers like
49 3D910C8. This does not make sense since the same printer works OK with other computers which I can use for every day work. I have not been able to solve the upgrade problem for over three months.

    • camilla mo

      Dear M. Nieniewski,

What’s the specific operating system that your PC is running?
      What’s the full error message?
