Fix Realtek High Definition Audio Driver Issue for Windows 10

Camilla Mo, in Technical Tips

No sound after upgrading to Windows 10? It’s probably a driver problem. Your audio driver is probably missing or out of date (and therefore incompatible with Windows 10).

So it’s usually a pretty quick fix. Most of the time, you just need to update your audio driver. Here’s how…

1

STEP 1 – Confirm it’s a driver problem
STEP 2 – Update your audio drivers

STEP 1 – Confirm it’s a driver problem

To confirm if your PC sound problem is caused by driver issue, you need to check for the driver status in Device Manager:

1) On your keyboard, press the Windows logo key   and R at the same time to invoke a Run command.

2. Type devmgmt.msc and click OK. This will start the Windows 10 Device Manager.

3. In Device Manager, expand Sound, video and game controllers. Under this category, you’ll see Realtek High Definition Audio. If there’s a yellow mark next to the device name (usually an exclamation or a question mark), there’s problem with the driver, and you need to update it. E.g.:

STEP 2 – Update your audio drivers

There are two ways you can update your audio drivers:

Option 1 – Manually – You’ll need some computer skills and patience to update your drivers this way, because you need to find exactly the right the driver online, download it and install it step by step.

OR

Option 2 – Automatically (Recommended) – This is the quickest and easiest option. It’s all done with just a couple of mouse clicks – easy even if you’re a computer newbie.

Option 1 – Download and install the driver manually

Realtek released its Windows 10 drivers about a month before Windows 10 was launched. To get them, you need to go to the Realtek website, find the drivers corresponding with your specific flavor of Windows 10 (32 or 64 bit) and download the driver manually.

Once you’ve downloaded the correct drivers for your system, double-click on the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.

Option 2 – Automatically update Realtek audio drivers

If you don’t have the time, patience or computer skills to update the Realtek driver manually, you can do it automatically with Driver Easy.

Driver Easy will automatically recognize your system and find the correct drivers for it. You don’t need to know exactly what system your computer is running, you don’t need to risk downloading and installing the wrong driver, and you don’t need to worry about making a mistake when installing.

You can update your drivers automatically with either the FREE or the Pro version of Driver Easy. But with the Pro version it takes just 2 clicks:

1. Download and install Driver Easy.

2. Run Driver Easy and click Scan Now button. Driver Easy will then scan your computer and detect any problem drivers.

3. Click the Update button next to the Realtek driver to automatically download and install the correct version of this driver (you can do this with the FREE version). Or click Update All to automatically download and install the correct version of all the drivers that are missing or out of date on your system (this requires the Pro version – you’ll be prompted to upgrade when you click Update All).

    Hi Corinne Locket,

Thanks for your sharing. Your comments may help others as well.

  • Rc Esser

A program like WinAmp did disturb the functioning of the Stereo Mix properties of RealTek HD Audio driver. Recording was muted quite often once in a while, and recording levels were limited to the values 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100. After uninstalling this program RealTek was more stable and all recording level values between 0 and 100 were possible. Unfortunately another program also seems to interfere, so muting still occurs although less often. What kind of programs do I have to inspect?

  • Camilla Mo

    Hi Green,

Hope the solutions in this link help you fix the not plugged in issues: https://www.drivereasy.com/knowledge/fix-no-speakers-headphones-plugged-issue-windows-1087/

Bought a Lenovo laptop with Windows 10 on it, everything worked, sound, video, internet… Then it wanted to do the big Windows update which I think is called Anniversary update/upgrade. After that it doesn’t even FIND an audio device, so trying to update drivers and whatnot is out, as I have nothing to update (the machine thinks). Audio troubleshooter doesn’t see any problem either.

    • Jamie Pelecanos

I am having the same problem and I can not find anything that can fix this.

      • Dakejev

I eventually found it, but can’t remember if it was in the device interface – I right clicked the background of the window, not any single one of the choices there, and made it show anything and everything, then it found “unrecognized devices”, I had it try to update their drivers and when it did, the computer suddenly realized that it _did_ actually have sound-related bits in it, and then I just had it automatically update all their drivers and now my sounds are working again.

I couldn’t find this in any of the guides, I just thought to adapt one of the suggestions in a different interface and that helped.

Sorry I’m a bit vague on this, but I didn’t write it down at the time.

My driver was uninstalled after the update – but I managed to reinstall thanks to the Toshiba site (Toshiba laptop), however the quality is SEVERELY reduced from what it was previously. Now, I’m lucky if having it on full volume (100) lets me hear whatever I’m playing from a few feet away. Any ways I could roll back to before the update (and therefore hopefully returning to my prior audio quality) or to improve the current quality?

  • Camilla Mo

    Hi Leroy,

If updating drivers doesn’t work, the problem might not be caused by drivers.
You can try to run Audio Troubleshooter and see if it helps. Refer steps below:
    1. Type “Troubleshoot” in Windows search.
    2. Click “Playing Audio” then follow the on-screen instructions.

My PC is so evil, if i install Audio Driver like Realtek, the compatible of mine was Realtek, so i install a New Realtek, and after i restart, My PC won’t boot (Running Windows 10) or it boot but it only see windows 10 logo but the running dotts doen’t appear, also it seams the problem was a bad driver even cannot boot to safemode. Pls Help it is my HDD have a error or this Computer Intel Icore7 have a problem.

  • Camilla Mo

    Hi Jessicca,

You can reinstall the driver using Driver Easy. Just several clicks are needed.

  • Rokinsas

    Thanks for the help!

  • Mark

The “warnings” in this article are BS. It doesn’t take a long time and you’d have to be a complete and utter moron to miss the file to download as they’re in bold.
    Further Driver Easy is malware.

Click Accept, Click Next, Click “Global” on either the 32 or 64 bit version. It doesn’t matter which one you pick because if you click the wrong one, it won’t install.

  • Sean Grady

I have an HP laptop. No sign of driver issues (it says I have the most updated driver). I have not had audio in years. I get audio if I plug in headphone or use an external source. Sometimes after unplugging headphones of rebooting my machine the audio will work for the first 4-5 seconds it is played but will then stop. This has caused a great deal of anger. Any insight?

  • BloodyMarie

Thank you for saving my life

  • Samuel Rodriguez

Hey! I have a samsung and one day the audio just stopped working, I followed this steps but the realtek device shows up working and up to date so I don’t know what’s the problem… Thanks

    • Camilla Mo

      Hi Samuel Rodriguez,

If the audio driver is updated, the problem might not be caused by drivers. Please ensure the sound is not muted.

  • Reilly Haskins

I have an Asus F555B Laptop (Running on Windows 10) and the sound card doesent show up in the Device Manager… the sound will not work in any application so i’m wondering, is this a hardware problem? Feel free to contact me if you have help at my email address – reillyhaskins@gmail.com

    • Camilla Mo

      Hi Reilly Haskins,

If the sound card doesn’t show up in the Device Manager, the device might be hidden. Please make a further check. Or the device is not recognized properly and displayed as unknown device. If not, I am afraid the sound card is having problem.

  • Thomas Radtke

Found this while looking for a solution to distorted in-game sound: I notice you have intel sound in parallel to the Realtek chip. On my Acer laptop, both subsystems where active, causing high load on interrupt handling. By deactivating the intel display audio in device manager, I was able to solve my problems. Thought I post this here since I haven’t found something similar on the net.

    • Mark Fisher

I’ve had the same issue and have been looking for a fix for so long, thank you so much

  • Creswick_Swimmer

I am using a Dell Inspiron and realtek audio, recording on screencastomatic. Until a few days ago, great. Now the sound drops out often and I cannot fix it. I need this for work, so am really desperate for any help. Is this a realtek, Windows10, screencastomatic or Dell issue? All drivers are up to date, makes no diff if I use the laptop’s mic or a headset/mic.

    • Jan Plante

I am having the same problem. The sound is on for headset but not speakers. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Realtek driver. It worked last evening for a Skype with family, this morning nothing. Any suggestions ?

      • Creswick_Swimmer

One thing I can think of is to make sure you click on the sound icon (bottom right of the lower pane on your screen) and ‘disable’ the one you don’t want to use, and ‘enable’ the one you do. Remember to ‘show disabled’ also, to see what is there but just not visible.

The other thing I’ve found, if you change from speaker to headset, or vice-versa, while using a program, you have to then quit the program and open it again with the headset or inbuilt mic. So, let’s say I listen to iTunes while I”m working, on my headset. I then open screencastomatic, and want to use the computer’s speakers. If my headset is plugged in when I open that program, and I pull out the headset, I have to shut screencastomatic, and reopen without the headset in.

One other thing that I was told, make sure you are running waves maxx audio pro, but I ended up buying an external mic that is ideal. Otherwise, apparently Dell needs you to run this. It can be set to open on start up.

Good luck, these ‘little’ things tend to be big and annoying!

  • Jack Focult

    Option 2 worked. Thank you!

  • Asim

    hy every one!
just go to troubleshooting audio devices, every thing will be ok. thanks

I was able to fix the volume issue on my Dell Inspiron after a driver update by opening Dell Audio (entered it in search box) and changed the setting from MaxxSense to Movie. It increased my volume greatly.

Wonderful! I couldn’t play anything on my notebook almost from the first day I bought it because of some stupid update of Windows 10 and the first option worked! I’m so thankful 🙂

  • Sound Fix

ATTENTION ANYONE STILL HAVING THIS PROBLEM:
If you have Nahimic installed, GET RID OF IT. I’ve had this audio problem since I got my laptop and reinstalling drivers did nothing. Uninstalled Nahimic 2 and the sound is working perfectly. I hope this helps, my ears are much happier now.

    • Justin

The issue for me was with Nahimic 2 installed. That you to whoever posted that tip!

      • STAR PLATINIUM

Thank you so much Mr Justin , i had no sound despite all drivers was well installed , then i did like you said and removed Nahimic 2 , and everything worked fine 🙂

Windows 64 BIT Asus Laptop & Realtek High Definition Audio.

Have had awful on and off issues with cracking and popping since windows 10 update..I have fixed and updated all drivers and it would still happen – found a SOLUTION in another forum you may find useful – it worked for me 😉 !!

Other User Wrote: “I’ve solved the pops and crackles from Realtek chips, and others, by going to Control Panel Power Settings and setting ‘Minimum processor state’ to 100%.”

When I went to this setting mine was at 5% – (don’t know why/how) so I changed it and its been working well since !
    Good Luck.

I have an older Dell machine that has Windows 10. I have working audio drivers, “High definition audio device” you know the basic windows audio driver. I am wondering if I can download the correct Realtek driver for my system and have two drivers installed at once while only using one when needed. Realtek has a built in Graphic Equalizer I wish to use.

  • zach

My drivers are up to date, but I am still unable to enable the my speakers to play sound. There is no way to get any audio out of my machine.

  • patrick

thx ,for some raisen windows 10 removed my realtek drivers , tryed option 1 and it workt

  • cp khatri

    Option 1 worked.
    Thank you.

  • Sebastian

I too have a similar crackling sound issue, with my speakers, I have no idá why it began to, but Now i downloaded Driver Easy.. and well you can tell me the drivers i’m not having up to date… but the fact that you are reducing the single Download speed down to 400 bytes to 20 kilobytes.. which will result that a 431,4MB download will take me roughly about 6 hours..

    • camilla mo

      Hi Sebastian,

Thank you for using Driver Easy.

The download speed of the Free version is limited due to the limited servers. We appreciate your understanding.
To get higher download speed, you can consider upgrading it to the Professional version.

With Professional version, you will enjoy free tech support. You can contact us for further assistance regarding any driver issue you have met.

      Thanks for your comment.

The speakers seem to be very sensitive. They cut out after a power failure, or if you need to unplig them for some reason.
The only fix I’ve come across, is to unplug your green speaker cable, then plug ig in again.
It fixes after 2 or 3 tries.
    hope this helps.

check you sound volume once in sound click the levels tab and look at microphone mine is muted there but every where else it looks on. they may be whats up with yours. also if u have security like kasper sky you can block it from here.as some secirtys can block apps and such from using your mic and cam.

I HAD the same problem. No sound in my Cambridge Soundworks 5.1, which is plugged into the rear jacks, but just fine in my headphones, which are plugged into the front audio jack.

After re-booting the newly installed WIN10, I noticed that my Realtek Audio Manager was missing, and therefore all of the stuff that I had been accustomed to doing was no longer doable.

Long story, short answer: WIN10 had simply failed to find/connect/re-connect/whatever Realtek, so I downloaded the newest drivers and re-booted and then UNPLUGGED and REPLUGGED all of my speaker wires and ……

      Everything works again.

p.s. no other WIN10 problems so far.

First, try to find out if it’s a hardware or software problem. Test the microphone on another device.

    Dear,

I’m having an issue on my notebook’s audio (The operacional system is Win10 Professional). The sound goes with a kind of wheezing while I’m doing tasks, but it goes ok if I leave the computer. I mean: I listen to music or I use the computer.

I downloaded last version of audio driver in Realtek’s website. The problem was solved, but the quality of sound was very, very low (in comparison to the original driver). How can I solve it ?

My notebook is the Dell Gaming Edition (7559 version).

    Thanks in advance,

If no driver problems, right click the speaker on the bottom right. Click sounds, Advanced tab. Change the default format. I used 24 bit 96000 Hz and everything works.

I was having a similar problem with audio skipping and video jutter. Kept thinking it was video related. Changed my speaker properties in speaker enhancements as you suggested and it works. Windows 10 had set my speakers to CD quality (???). Thanks for the tip. It worked!

I have no sound this morning after a 4/15-16 upgrade to the driver. I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it, still no sound. Below is the Event that wiped out my sound:

Driver Management has concluded the process to add Service IntcAzAudAddService for Device Instance ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0899&SUBSYS_102805B7&REV_1000\4&A25F3A2&0&0001 with the following status: 0.

What can I do to resolve this?

Same thing. I tried updating the driver. Then uninstalling and re-installing. Then rolled back to the previous version. Nothing. No sound from the internal speakers. Only with headphones or bluetooth.

    Nice one, it’s real help

We have an ASUS laptop with Windows 10. We do have sound – but it’s crackling. Even when plugging in headphones. We updated the drivers and we do not have a yellow exclamation, and yet we are still having the crack

    • Kenneth Egerton

Same problem here. I had already upgraded to 10 but when I switched on this morning Microsoft had decided to install it again.I had had no soundissues with the previous install.

Jamie, hi I have the same issue with a UK ASUS N70SV 17″ Black laptop. When I was using Windows 7, Realtek Driver updates fixed the ‘crackling’ sound issue. But having done a clean install of Windows 10, it has come back again and ASUS have not updated their older models to windows 10 (Which I think they should have). The only passable option I have been able to use is rolling back the Realtek driver to the Microsoft ‘High Definition Audio’ driver’, it crackles less but is not a perfect solution but at least then the audio is of an ‘okay’ quality.

      • Forestien Chenel

it’s probably because you guys have the option ” egalisation loudness ” ( or something like that ) checked in your audio manager. It causes saturation when the volume is too high, it’s aimed at improving the sound when at low volume only.

      • Jay

had the same issue but i uninstalled the old realtek audio driver to install a new driver depending on my system and the sound is okay now. So i suggest you try it too.
        Good luck.

Latest version of win10 just did tris to me. Laptop came with some other software to control sound aside from the realtek drivers. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling both, only way to fix it was using the windows driver that sound really bad, but at least I can hear something.. plus I don’t have to go through realtek’s site anymore, seriously they haven’t updated that thing since the 90s

      • Davi

Try turning on stereo mix in your driver software

  • Rick

i’m having some issues as well I have hp dv6 with IDT hd sound card but the user interface is not functioning when I try to change any setting. pls help me out if anybody else having same issues.

  • sameer

i have downloaded all the updates but how to install them..??

    • camilla mo

      Dear sameer,

You can use the inf file to install the driver manually step by step.

It is recommended that you upgrade the program to Professional version, then all drivers can be downloaded and installed automatically with just one click.

I have a slightly different problem (but still realtek on win 10): while playing sounds through headphones, it randomly turns off (for example after pausing/unpausing on youtube, playing a video from a different website, or after not playing sounds for a while – if I continuously play music this does not seem to happen). If I go to ‘Sound’ I can see that the device shows that music is playing (green bars appearing next to it on the right), but nothing is in my headphones. The only fix I found is to go to the Properties of the playback device, then Advanced, and change the default format. But it is super annoying to do this every single time. Any ideas? Drivers are all up to date and the integrated Windows sound fix didn’t find anything. Thanks 🙂

      Same problem here…. please help!

    • mina

I have the same problem as well! The audio keeps going in and out. It even looks like my Realtek driver is up to date; I can’t figure out the issue :/

      • Ian David Jensen

Same problem here almost, I have a creative SB, I have to remove it from the device manager and reinstall it each time i reboot…
Seriously, how can Microsoft force an update down our throat and then not hotfix something like this immidiately?

    • Pol

No fix yet? Anyone, please help 😀

    • Casey Langness

I am also having this issue. But not only can I not hear anything, it stops my spotify entirely and gives me a driver error in ventrilo

      • Casey Langness

Im planning to try the 32 bit driver instead of the 64 bit to see if that fixes the issue.

Hi! I can’t use my CD/DVD driver after downloading Windows 10. When I go to “Device Manager” there is no exclamation mark before any driver. I tried to update the driver, but Windows says that it it already updated. If I download Driver Easy, do you think it is going to work? Or is it a problem that has nothing to do with the driver?
    Thank you!

    • camilla mo

      Dear Juliana Vieira,

If the drivers are updated and there is no yellow mark before any driver, most probably the problem was not caused by drivers.

    • Sem

Hi Julia, I experienced the same thing. After trying a couple of things I did manage to find an alternative solution that workded for me. If u open the “realtek Audio configuration” dialog, and than go to advanced settings you can activate “multi-streaming”. activating and than deactivating works for me everytime!
      good luck!

  • Zé Pedro

is it need to pay for the first option?

Half of the time when I download the drivers that are missing or in need of update, there’s no .exe file in what’s downloaded which makes it impossible to update anything

  • Victor

Attention: Never EVER download a so-called driver manager for any reason whatsoever. It most assuredly comes bundled with additional junkware.

    • camilla mo

      Dear Customer,

We understand that software bundled with junkware is really annoying and dangerous.
Driver Easy is a 100% clean program. It doesn’t contain any junkware, malware or adware. You can use it safely.

  • Not working

    • camilla mo

      Dear Samik,

      Thanks for your comment.

The tips here would help you fix Realtek audio driver issues on Windows 10. If your sound problem was caused due to other issues, it won’t work.
