[SOLVED] Path of Exile 2 Keeps Crashing

If Path of Exile 2 keeps crashing, you’re not alone. Since the release, players have reported a wide range of issues, including crashes on startup, random freezes during mapping, DirectX 12 loading-screen hangs, black screens, and even full system reboots. Many players are also encountering the Deadlock Detected error, which typically means the game is stuck waiting for one or more game threads to respond. While some fixes that worked for Path of Exile 1 still help, others are outdated or can even introduce new problems.

In this guide, we’ll walk through 7 proven fixes based on extensive community reports and our troubleshooting experience. 

How to fix Path of Exile 2 crashing

Because several different issues can produce similar symptoms, it’s best to work through the fixes below from top to bottom until you find the one that does the trick.

Fix 1 – Clear the shader cache

One of the most common causes of Path of Exile 2 freezing or suffering long stutters is a corrupted or bloated shader cache. Shader folders containing tens of thousands of cached files. Over time, rebuilding and loading these files can lead to severe hitching, loading delays, and even crashes during combat-heavy maps.

Since the game automatically rebuilds its shader cache, deleting these files is completely safe.

1. Press Windows + R. Type in %appdata%  and press Enter.
2. Open the Path of Exile 2 folder.
3. Delete the following folders if they exist:
   ShaderCacheD3D12 or ShaderCacheVulkan
4. Launch the game again.

Check if the game loads normally and stuttering or freezing is significantly reduced after the shader cache rebuilds.

Fix 2 – Adjust in-game graphics settings

Path of Exile 2 can place an unusually heavy load on the CPU during dense combat, particularly with certain graphics settings enabled. Players on high-end Ryzen CPUs (5800X, 7800X3D) are particularly affected. You can try lowering a few CPU-intensive options to see if the stability improves.

1. Launch the game and navigate to Options > Graphics.
2. Change the following settings:

• Sound Channel Count: Low
• Screen Shake: Disabled
• Shadow Quality: Low
• Global Illumination: Disabled
• Dynamic Culling: Enabled

You don’t necessarily need to change everything. If you’re only making one adjustment, lowering Sound Channel Count has helped a large number of players reduce crashes and severe frame drops.

Restart the game and monitor the CPU temperatures and overall stability.

Fix 3 – Update your graphics driver

Outdated or corrupted GPU drivers are one of the most common causes of instability in modern games. PoE2 is especially sensitive to driver-level bugs, and players have reported significant improvements after updating to newer driver versions. 

To update your graphics driver, there are mainly two options: manually or automatically.

You can go to the GPU manufacturer’s website, such as NVIDIA or AMD, search for your model, and find the latest graphics driver package. If you’re using the manufacturer’s official software (AMD Adrenalin or NVIDIA app), you can also use it to update the graphics driver.

Restart your PC after the driver update. If the crashes don’t stop, you can also roll back to a previous stable graphics driver recommended by your GPU vendor or the community.

Click the three-dot button next to your graphics driver and select All available versions. From the list, install the version you want.

Fix 4 – Switch from DirectX 12 to Vulkan

DX12 is the default renderer for PoE2 and can offer superior performance on modern, high-powered systems. However, if you’re encountering black screens, crashes, or a loading screen freeze, Vulkan may be more stable and deliver smoother performance.

1. Launch Path of Exile 2. Open Options > Graphics.
2. Locate Renderer and change it to Vulkan.
   
3. Restart the game.

If loading-screen crashes no longer occur, Vulkan is likely the better renderer for your system. If the problem persists, just change the setting back to DirectX12 and try the next solution.

Fix 5 – Limit CPU state to 99%

Some Ryzen processors, especially the 5800X, 5800X3D, and 7800X3D,  can reach very high temperatures while running Path of Exile 2. If your CPU is overheating and triggering thermal shutdowns, temporarily limiting boost clocks may improve stability.

1. Type power plan into the Windows search box and click Edit power plan.
2. Click Change advanced power settings.
   
3. Expand Processor power management > Maximum processor state. Set the settings to 99% and click OK to save the changes.
   

This disables CPU boost clocks. Some players have reported that limiting the processor state can improve temperatures but introduce instability when opening the passive skill tree. If this occurs, simply restore the setting to 100%.

A better long-term solution is to improve CPU cooling or undervolt the processor if you’re comfortable making BIOS adjustments.

Test if your CPU temperatures drop and the crashes disappear. If not, try the next fix.

Fix 6 – Remove the BuildPlanner file

If you constantly see the Deadlock Detected error and can’t get past the title screen, you can try deleting the BuildPlanner folder to resolve the problematic build files.

1. Navigate to your Documents folder on your PC and go to My Games\Path of Exile 2\BuildPlanner\.
2. Delete all the files in the folder. This will wipe out custom planners but won’t affect your actual character progression.

Restart PoE2 to see if the Deadlock Detected message disappears.

Fix 7 – Disable overclocking

Path of Exile 2 is particularly sensitive to unstable CPU and GPU overclocks. Even an overclock that’s perfectly stable in other games can trigger crashes during demanding maps.

Open your GPU overclocking tool (MSI Afterburner, ASUS GPU Tweak, AMD Adrenalin) and reset clocks to factory defaults. If the game is still unstable, consider reducing the GPU core clock by 50-100 MHz. This lowers heat and power draw and helps resolve the CPU bottleneck.

If you’ve manually overclocked your CPU, enter the BIOS to restore your CPU to default settings.

If necessary, you can also experiment with a small GPU underclock (around 50–100 MHz on the core clock) to improve stability.

Because Path of Exile 2 crashing can stem from several different causes, there’s rarely a single universal fix. Start with the easiest solutions, such as clearing the shader cache, adjusting graphics settings, and updating your graphics driver. Most players are able to resolve the issue before reaching the final few fixes.
