Users of laptop with Windows 10 operating system may have encountered this problem: the cursor of the laptop is not working all of a sudden and the only way to make the arrow on the screen move is to use a mouse. This is rather annoying, but luckily, this is not a difficult question to resolve. Follow the instructions below to see if your problem could be fixed. 



Method One: Roll Back Driver to Previous Version 


1) Go to Device Manager

2) Locate and expand category Mice and other pointing devices.



3) Then right click the device with the name XX(Depends on your laptop manufacturer) Pointing Device and choose Properties.  



4) Go to Drivers tab, then choose Roll Back Driver option. If this option is grey, you will not be able to use this feature. Please follow the second method to see if it helps. 



5) If prompted whether or not to continue the uninstall, please press Yes to continue. You might need to restart your computer after the roll back. Make sure that you have saved your important files and then restart your computer. 




Method Two: Reinstall Touchpad Driver Manually


If the first method is not working out for you, please try this method instead. 

1) Download Intel IO chipset driver from Intel support first. Then double click the Setup file in the PlatformInstaller folder and run the installation. 


2) This driver is for Windows 8.1, so you might need to run it in compatibility mode after the install. Right click the icon of this driver and choose Properties


3) Then go to Compatibility tab, tick the box before Run this program in compatibility mode for:. Then choose the correct operating system for your operating system.  





4) Download the touchpad driver for Windows 10 from the support webpage of the manufacturer. Unzip the file if needed. 

5) Then go to Device Manager.

6) Locate and expand category Mice and other pointing devices.




7) Then right click the device with the name XX(Depends on your laptop manufacturer) Pointing Device and choose Update Driver Software….  



8) Then choose Browse my computer for driver software



9) Then copy the address of the downloaded pointing driver setup file and paste it here in the search box. Then click Next to continue. 


Then wait for the driver to be installed. You might need to restart your computer later after you finish this installation. 


Alternatively, you can use Driver Easy to help you with the update of the pointing device. Driver Easy is a program that helps you scan, download and update all the outdated or missing drivers on your computer. It is a very easy to use program too. There are only two steps involved. 

Step One: Press the Scan Now button to see if there are some drivers need to update on your computer. 


Step Two: Press the Update button next to the driver that you need to update.



That’s it. Just sit back tight and wait for Driver Easy take care of the rest of the update for you.

Method Three: A Work-around

This method is reported useful according to some users, so we include it here for you to have a try. 

If you leave your laptop on all the time and only close the laptop lid instead of turn the laptop off completely, you might want to check this method out. Your laptop seems to remain in a sleep state after you have opened the lid. To fix the problem, you need press the Windows key to invoke the Start panel, then use the left arrow key to navigate to the Shut Down, Hibernate, Log Out, Lock and Sleep functions. Choose Sleep and let your  laptop go to sleep. Once it is in a sleep state, hit the Esc key and it will wake up with the touchpad mouse function restored.
